Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum is one of the most popular and visited museums in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The museum houses the largest collection of works by the famous artist Vincent van Gogh. It is quite special that the museum and the works of this painter have become so famous over the years. As a painter Vincent van Gogh was very little successful, in fact, he sold only one painting throughout his life. Fortunately, that has been no reason for any lover of his work to stop.

Currently, the museum has its 200 paintings in its permanent collection. In addition, you can find more than 500 drawings and 750 written letters here. These objects are viewed annually by more than 2 million visitors.

The museum and the collection

It has been chosen to display the collection of works in chronological order. This means that at the beginning of the museum you will encounter his first paintings and as you progress you will see his later paintings. A remarkable detail in this is that you can clearly see that he has started painting more and more cheerful. One of his first works by the famous Potato Eaters, bit boring in color. In his later period you can see works really full of colour, he has clearly started painting in a completely different way, something you can see clearly here.
There is more to be found in the museum than just Van Gogh's work. This way you will also find works by Monet and Gauguin among others. Various exhibitions are also held for educational purposes.

Café and shop

In the museum you will find the museum café. Delicious to have a good cup of coffee after or during your visit to the museum. Wireless internet access is available in the café free of charge. There is also a shop in the museum. You can buy books, repros and many other products related to Vincent van Gogh in there. Nice to walk through and maybe buy something beautiful for home!

Disabled

The museum is very accessible for people with reduced mobility. Lifts for wheelchairs are available and there are disabled parking spots for cars right in front of the museum.

Location and accessibility

The Van Gogh Museum is located on the Museumplein. This is one of the most touristic locations in Amsterdam. The Stedelijk Museum and the Rijksmuseum are within walking distance as are other nearby attractions.

The museum is easily accessible by public transport. Various bus and tram connections stop in front of the door. It is also easily accessible by car. Under the Museumplein there is a large parking garage where there is almost always space.
