There is no city in the world where cycling is as much as in Amsterdam. A city in which almost every inhabitant is in possession of a bicycle. There are about 750,000 inhabitants and these have together over 600,000 bicycles. It's no wonder that there are so many bicycles in the city because it is the most convenient way to transport in the city. The city centre is old, narrow and not well equipped for cars. In total there is more than 400 kilometers of cycle path in the city centre so you also get the space and do not have to drive everywhere between the cars. Everywhere in the city there are places to park your bike, a lock is necessary!

Tourists and cycling in Amsterdam

At first, tourists will look rather strange and astonished at the standard cycling habit of the Amsterdammer. Yet many tourists want to experience the experience of cycling in Amsterdam itself and that makes sense too! By bike you can explore the city very well. It takes a while to get used to but soon you will master it and go smoothly between traffic and cycle from one attraction to another.

Bike rental

There are bicycle rental companies throughout the city. You can rent ordinary but also electric bikes. The prices are very low, on average about 8 Euro per day for a normal bike. This is often cheaper than a day of public transport. The bikes you rent are neatly maintained and meet the safety requirements. In places around the Central Station and other busy places in the city you can easily rent bicycles. A map is often available at the bike rental companies so you can easily find the route.

Bike tours

A much done excursion in Amsterdam is to make an organized bike tour through the city. Accompanied by a guide, you'll follow a route and the guide will tell you more about what you'll encounter along the way. There are general cycling routes but also more specialized routes where you will discover, for example, only the Jordaan or historic sites.

Safety

In Amsterdam, the trade in bicycles is a lively business. For this reason, many bikes are stolen but also offered cheap. The use of a secure lock is a must, ask also when you rent a bike and ask if it necessary to get an additional theft insurance.
