Tropenmuseum

Just outside the city centre you will find the Tropics Museum in a beautiful building. A museum located near the Oosterpark in Amsterdam East that deals with world cultures. The museum is characterized by a large collection of objects from mainly Dutch overseas territories. You have to think of countries like Indonesia and Suriname.

History

In 1984 the museum was founded by Fredrik Willem van Eeden. In 1871 the museum was housed in Pavilion Welfauge in Haarlem. With the expansion of the collection, this building quickly became too small and in 1901 the current building was built in Amsterdam. The building was designed by the architectural office of Nieuwkerken from The Hague.

In 2014 a fusion took place between the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum Ethnology from Leiden and the Afrika Museum in Berg en Dal.

Collection

The Tropenmuseum has a very extensive collection of both old and modern objects. Objects such as artifacts, weapons, photos and videos, you'll find it all. Thanks to the modern design of the museum, everything is beautifully depicted with beautiful stories and images. Highlights of the collection are the textile from Indonesia and the huge amount of photos and images that will be recognized by many.

Only a limited part of the entire collection can be seen in the museum. Fortunately, you can view more of the collection online on the official website of the Tropenmuseum.

Tropics Museum Junior

Especially for children from 6 - 13 years old, they have created a complete junior section in the Tropen Museum. You can take guided tours here as well, take a look at the collection with the family or organize your children's party here. The junior part is called Sabi Suriname and you can learn a lot about Suriname in a fun and playful way. For children a new world opens, it is really very fun!

Temporary collections

Like many museums, the Tropenmuseum also has room for changing collections. They borrow complete collections from all over the world to turn them into a beautiful exhibition in Amsterdam. They have been doing this in this way for many years. An overview of all current exhibitions can be found on the official website of the Tropenmuseum.

Shopping & Eating

There is a restaurant in the museum. At 10 o'clock in the morning this opens and you can go here for a good cup of coffee (or tea of course) with a pastry or for example a nice sandwich with a glass of wine.
And offcourse there is a museum shop. Informative books, souvenirs of all places in the world, gadgets and textiles. There's something for everyone here.
