Rembrandt House

For almost twenty years, one of the most famous Dutch painters lived in this house on the Jodenbreestraat. We are, of course, talking about Rembrandt van Rijn. The painter who painted, among other things, the Night Watch (part of the collection of and shown in the Rijksmuseum). Apart from the fact that the painter lived here, he also had his studio and art trade here.

About Rembrandt

Rembrandt van Rijn was born in 1606 and left for Amsterdam in 1631. First in a rental house until in 1639 he bought the house on the Jodenbreestraat, he paid only 13,000 guilders for this at the time, of course a pittance compared to the amounts you would have to pay for this today. In the nearly 20 years he lived here, he's been through a lot. Great successes as a painter and artist but at the same time deep valleys as a trader in art. 1642 was the year when the Night Watch was finished, a great success for him but in the same year his wife Saskia died. He went badly and debts went up high. So high that in 1658 he had to sell his house and switch to a rental house. In 1669 he died, he became 63 years old.

The Rembrandt House

In 1907 the building came into the hands of the Rembrandthuis Foundation. It has been made of a museum that is welcoming quite some visitors. The style and decor has been completely restored to the period that Rembrandt spent here. Furniture, utensils but much more interesting many of his own works of art can be admired here. You can enter all the spaces in the building and you will really learn a lot about the life of this world-famous painter.

Guided tours and audio tour

You can choose to book a guided tour at the museum. This is at fixed times and the schedule is best viewed on the website of the museum itself. At the entrance of the museum you can rent an audio tour, this is really fun and educational and we strongly recommend you to do. This is, of course, in different languages.
